This is a great little trick to know for making old dresses seem knew again. It's quick and very simple, and can be done with just a few tools.

What you'll need:
- Dress, and material for a collar.
Sharp scissors
- Sewing needle, or sewing machine
- Pins
- Thread that complements your material
- Measuring tape
- Stitch-ripper for any boo-boos that might occur

1 - Take any plain dress (mine's an American Apparel one) with a rounded neckline. Of course there's no reason to say you can't put a different shaped collar on a different neckline, this is just what I'm going for.

2 - Pick the material for the collar. I went for a contrasting leopard print, but with the same cool tone. This is actually the bottom of my leopard maxi skirt that I recently shortened.

3 - Measure all the way around the neckline for its length, then divide this by two. Then, using the tape measure to ensure it's exact, mark out the middle with a pin.

4 - Pin your material along the neckline. Using the tape measure, measure the length of material you need. Then decide how deep you want the collar to be, and mark this depth on the material with a pin.

5 - Double over your material, then cut out two rectangles. You should end up with something that looks like this.

6 - Fold the top of your material over the hem of the neckline and inside the dress. Pin it on, shaping to it fit the neckline.

7 - You should now have something that almost looks like a collar! Stitch this on securely, either by machine or hand - I did it by hand out of pure laziness.

8 - Hem the bottom of the collar, and round off the pointed bit. You may need to put a small stitch in the bottom of the collar to secure it to the dress and prevent it from flapping around.

9 - Repeat these steps on the other side!

Here's a deliciously bad photobooth picture of what the finish collar should look like. I'm wearing it out tonight, so there'll be proper outfit pictures up in the morning!
